Like my previous entries, the following photos are just what I saw as I wandered around aimlessly today, from Central IFC to Star Ferry, to Tsim Sa Tsui, to Kowloon Park, to Mongkok, and finally, arriving at Jordan for dinner with my aunt and uncle.

Sunday is a very unique day in Hong Kong. It is the one day, where by law, ‘maids’ are given a day-off. Filipino maids tend to congregate at Central while Causeway Bay’s Victoria Park is a popular meeting spot for maids from Indonesia, while across Victoria Harbour, Muslim maids hang out at Kowloon Park.

My original plan was to go to Central to photograph the hundreds of Filipino maids chilling on their day off. But upon my arrival, I decided I didn’t feel comfortable invading their privacy. So I wandered around instead, with the ultimate goal of ending up in Mongkok for a much needed thai massage.

I’m going to miss Hong Kong. There is something that draws me to her. There is a distinct feeling of nostalgia although I feel very much as an outsider. Yet, there is a feeling of home. Despite this tugging on my heart, I know I will return soon and look forward to returning to Sydney, back to my own bed, to the freshness of the cold, and my awesome couples waiting for me.

The following is an excerpt from the Oxford Dictionary.

Tonight, and perhaps for some time now, I have been bitter. It is an emotion that can easily spiral when not controlled. I am writing this partly for myself, so that I may reflect and secondly, provide support to others who may be in a similar situation as myself.

Business has been slow. I have been busy, very busy. But business has been slow. And that was why I was particularly bitter tonight.

The trigger for me tonight was seeing some body of photography work featured by a popular wedding blog that was in my opinion, very lousy in terms of photography. The blog featured only photographs of the flower bouquets, and the chemistry of the couple (which was the foundation of the photography), seemed irrelevant. This angered me a lot. I understand that the primary function of a wedding blog is to provide ideas for its readership, but when more than half of the featured images are of the same bouquet of flowers, it pisses me off because the emotion between the two people in front of the camera were belittled beyond recognition.

I have been wanting to submit many of my weddings, preweddings and love stories to wedding blogs. But I have a critical shortcoming. I don’t take enough ‘detail’ photos of flowers, dresses, shoes, and stuff in general. I focus on the couple. I focus on where their hands and feet are. I focus on the looks, the smiles, the giggles, and the laughter that my couples express. The thought of taking a photo of a bouquet doesn’t even come to mind, let alone more than 10 photos of the same bouquet of flowers!

The game is what it is. To be featured brings in a lot of traffic. Perhaps I have to simply lower my pride and play by the rules? But I don’t know if I can bring myself to …

Bitterness is a beast that must be mastered. Like happiness, bitterness is a choice. Tonight, I was weak and succumbed to dark and non-constructive thoughts.

My mama is 84 this year. She has five children, five grandchildren, and is soon to be a great-grandmother. She doesn’t have to work. She has a home (an apartment that is very spacious for Hong Kong standards). My mama does not have any illness. In general, she is relatively well off compared to many people of her age and generation. Yet, she chooses to be bitter about her life.

This is what snapped me out of my bitter streak. I see the way my mama lives day-t0-day and don’t want to go down the same path. I have so many things to be thankful for. I have a roof over my head. I am financially sufficient for the next year. I have an amazingly sexy and smart girlfriend. I have loving parents-who-are-too-busy-bickering-at-each-other-to-pick-on-me (lol). I am to be an uncle soon. I have my health. I am going to Bali, Singapore, and Malaysia in the next few months. I have many more weddings for awesome couples this year. And I have manboobs.

What started off as a feeling of bitterness, has turned into a drive to be better. It is all too easy to blame everything else but myself. On the website front, there is still a lot of work to improve SEO. On the client-base front, I can ask my existing clients to spread the word. Bitterness is a choice. I choose not to be bitter. A lot of hard work will be required. A lot of difficulties will continue to come my way. But I choose to be happy.

Business may be slow. But it is a test of patience. Besides I have egg tarts to eat!

One of our locations was in Sai Kung, New Territories. A permit is required to drive your car into Sai Kung East Country Park, otherwise, you may choose to hike (a good 3 hours) or take a taxi. If you have never been, you really must visit when you get the chance to stopover in Hong Kong. Due to its restricted entrace and protection, most of Sai Kung is very beautiful. We were very lucky to have blue skies. The price we paid was sweltering heat and mosquitoes. But the sunset, the shooting star, and the stars, was well worth it.

I visited my grandfathers today. I do not know what to do when I arrive at a cemetery, but fill it my duty to visit them when ever I am in Hong Kong. I don’t have anything to say. I just arrive at their resting places, then leave. It may seem like an empty gesture, but one that feels right. I cannot explain it.

My aunt came along with me to the cemetery. In the photos below, you will see her attending to grandfather’s grave. My aunt has been tirelessly looking after the family since my immediate family left Hong Kong in 1990 for Australia. She has been on the front-lines, taking care of my late grandfather and my mama. That’s 22 years on the front-lines. And it shows. I wish I could help more. I wish I could take some of the burden from her. I wish I knew the words to say to her, but I’m not the one taking care of mama on a daily basis. I’m not the one who is shouldering the full brunt of the weight of the family. So all I can do, is be the best I can in life, so that she has something to be proud and happy of.

In the evening, my sister and I took mama to porpor’s place. For years now, mama had wanted to visit porpor. Mama is turning 84 this year, Porpor is 86. The last time they met was at my grandfather’s funeral almost 2 years ago. Porpor is almost the exact opposite of mama. She is gentle and quiet, whilse mama is loud and boisterous. Porpor is patient while mama is very impatient. Porpor listens while mama likes to talk … So the three of us made the trek from Sai Wan Ho to Wah Yuen Village – a good hour’s trek by MTR and taxi/mini-bus. Mama doesn’t go out much. It took her 15 minutes to find her Octopus card (I found it in her purse). Unlike many able-bodied people her age, she chooses to confine herself indoors. She doesn’t like going to cafes and restaurants or hang out with fellow oldies. And she is never one to go out when it is dark. By 7.30pm, Mama was itching to leave. Being outside her comfort zone, at night, terrifies her. Nevertheless, bringing the grandmothers together was worthwhile. The reality of life is that they may never see each other in person again …

Every time I spend time in Hong Kong, I am reminded of my family’s history. I was fortunate to have migrated to Australia at such a young age. I see the teenagers around me, I see the working people my age around me, and I cannot help but see a lack of direction or future for them. Hong Kong is famous for its shopping. On the flipside, it is also a very slippery slope for locals. Constantly, one is bombarded with marketing. Hong Kong is a very materialistic city driven purely by cash.

My Western upbringing in a foreign land enables me to see things very differently to those of the average Hong Kong-er. Things have improved no doubt. The Hong Kong of the 90s was filthy. The Hong Kong of the 90s was a lot less friendly. The Hong Kong in the present day, has definitely changed. But old ways are hard to lose.

If my parents had never decided to take my sister and I overseas, I shudder to think of what my life would have been.

For the past few days now, I have been taking photos of random things. It has been a long time since I took photographs for a personal reason. It feels good, and one day, these photos are going to provide me with memories of what I am experience right now.

I rarely venture to the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. I was born and raised on Hong Kong Island, and perhaps it is a bit of elitism, but I don’t like crossing the Harbour to the other side. Kowloon is probably most well known to tourists for Mong Kok – shopping paradise of markets and shopping centers as far as the eye can see. Come on a weekend to Mong Kok and you will see the hundreds and thousands of locals and tourists walking the streets.

I don’t like that side to Hong Kong. I have little interest in shopping. There is so much more to Hong Kong than just shopping. There is so much history. So much things you can learn from just people watching that it seems like a waste when I hear people coming to Hong Kong for just 2 days to shop.

I spent the day with my grandmothers. Who knows how much more time I will have left with them … I want to tell my own children one day, who their great-grandmothers were, and have the photos to accompany the stories.

The following photos are centered around my grandmother (mama – father’s mother). Like many people from her generation, she has gone through her fair share of hardships. But unlike many who chose to move on and embrace what they have, my mama has the unfortunate habit of seeing the glass as being always half-empty. As a grandchild who grew up with little hardship, it is easy to judge, easy to ignore her daily ramblings as rants of bitterness.

Mama has aged a lot. She complains of aches and pains but she rarely is ever ill. Her weight has dropped under 100 pounds and she hasn’t washed her hair in weeks (if not months). Her daily routine has become one of getting up past midday, making herself a coffee, watching TV for hours before reheating some food for dinner, then some more TV, before bed at 9pm. That is her day and her life. Whenever I visit my mama, I try to encourage her to go for an afternoon walk. She used to by her own accord. Then she stopped. When ever we do go for a walk around Quarry Bay, all the other oldies wave and say, “Big sister, long time no see! Where have you been? Come walk more!”. You see, my mama has a reputation around Sai Wan Ho, Sau Kei Wan, and Quarry Bay. She is the grannypoo with a head full of white cauliflower-like hair, and a voice that you can hear from miles away.

My mama’s apartment is littered with photographs. Photographs of herself, of her grandchildren, of her children – mostly of her grandchildren. If there is something that makes her happy, it is her grandchildren. Not many people have photos displayed everywhere anymore. The digital age made sure of that. So it is refreshing to walk into a home and to be immediately greeted with generations of memories in the simply format of a printed photograph.

The past guides us directly and indirectly towards something. We have the power to choose who we want to be, but we can never remove our roots. I will always be mama’s grandchild, and in some shape and form, carry the burden of the hardships the family has endured.

In the evening, I went hiking with my uncle. It poured. No joke. It absolutely poured. Needless to say, we had to stop and return. I cannot remember the last time I was caught in heavy rain in Hong Kong. It felt oddly exciting. So I whipped out my camera and took a few photos whilst waiting for #9 bus to take us back to Sau Kei Wan (from Shek O). I was half-expecting Totoro to rock up and stand next to us at the bus stop, with his big leaf as his umbrella. Unfortunately, neither Totoro or the Cat Bus eventuated. Shortly afterwards, it thunderstorm-ed.

Enjoy. And for those who either grew up in Hong Kong, or have visited Hong Kong, I hope these pictures bring back your own unique memories.

If you haven’t been told already, I am currently in Hong Kong taking a two-week siesta after a very hectic April. My lower back is still aching from all the shooting and hours spent sitting with poor posture in front of a computer. Originally, this trip was going to be another portfolio building experience, but after the past few weeks, I made the tough decision to take a break and spend time with my family instead. So that is exactly what I am doing.

June 12th 2007 is the day our paths crossed.. I didn’t know it at first, but that was the beginning of our love story.

The first time I noticed Alex was over my bowl of cereal, he had just walked through the door & my breathe caught in my throat – he was to join our training class, instantly I thought of two things, what a hottie and how was I to speak to him everyday for the next two weeks without blushing?

He was the perfect guy, mysterious with a mix of bad boy.

There was nothing to say to him, I tried to find the words but nothing I rehearsed in my head sounded anything far from a teenage crush. So I said nothing – going about my day whilst stealing glimpses of him without him noticing.

He made it easier the second day by bringing in his motorbike helmet, I used it as an ice breaker to start a conversation and it all went from there. My first time on a motorbike was one of the most thrilling experiences – I trusted Alex. As the rider, I grabbed on tight and screamed for dear life! Lunch dates, texts and motorbike rides were my excuses to get to know him better. I found time flying by so quickly and saddened that there were not enough hours in the day for us to get to know each other.

As his last day drew closer, I knew I wouldn’t have a chance to see him again, but I kept pushing that thought in the back of my mind. Walking up to my desk I found a folder with only the words  “for your eyes only” written on top. I opened it to find a handwritten letter and portraits of our time together, one of us on the motorbike, and the other of me. Besides stalker alert running through my mind, I also thought it was very sweet. No one had taken the effort to express their feelings to me like this before. Alex definitely stood out – he was a keeper!

Soon, all the days seemed to mesh into one. We had spent so much time together that it was hard to keep track of what we did and when. Motorbike rides, sweet dates and falling asleep whilst on the phone became the norm. Instant comfort is what I feel when I am with Alex, like we had known each other before and somehow had made our way together again.

Our love story continues. Five years on, we are inseparable. We bicker, we bash, we argue and plot revenge on each other.. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Alex is everything I am not – Our time together is filled with laughter, sweet memories and many more wonderful stories to unfold. I am definitely looking forward to the days when we are old and wrinkly & I am running him over with my motorized scooter.

Mier and James are to be married in five short weeks at The Boathouse in Canberra. This extended Love Story, was part of the get-to-know-you-in-front-of-a-camera, that I offer to most wedding couples.  We stopped at the National Carillon, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, ANU, Haig Park, and finished off at Kamberra Wine Company.

I simply adore the gorgeous Autumn colours on display. Autumn has got to be my favourite season for photographing couples in love. I look forward to returning to Canberra (something I thought I’d never say).

MJ & Kev chose Shelly Beach, Manly as their backdrop to be married. It was a Friday wedding: small, intimate, and without fuss. They had their closest friends and family in attendance, some of whom had traveled across oceans and seas to be with them on the day. Quite naturally, the dinner reception was held at Le Kiosk. Over canapes and drinks, we got to see Sydney at its finest – over a superb sunset.

A magical day. One that all those in attendance, will remember and cherish for a very long time. Congratulations MJ & Kev!

I had sent Emma a basic questionnaire prior to meeting them so that I could get a feel of what they were seeking in their wedding photographer. Their combined response, was beyond my dreams. It was like a textbook answer! Everything they said, echoed my personal approach to how I photograph couples in love and subsequently, weddings.

What would you like from your wedding photographer?

Emma: Justin and I are not too concerned about tradition, so we are looking for someone with a relaxed and flexible approach towards our wedding photography. Yes, we want the usual shots but we also want someone who is comfortable enough to adjust their photography techniques to best suit us as a couple. While we do need guidance, there’s no point pushing us to do whatever is the latest trend because that might not be “us”.

Justin: I would like our photographer to have an interest in Emma and I as individuals with our own unique traits, and as a couple that has similarities and differences. I would then like for our photographer to be able to bring out these individual and combined traits, in a way that is not bound by conventional wedding photography methods or locations, but that is unique and appropriate for us. Mostly, I would like to get to know our photographer and enjoy the shared experience that comes with capturing my love for Emma on film. I want be able to look back and remember having a great time meeting our photographer, getting to know all about them (as they get to know about us), and all coming together to create some beautiful, intimate, and personal photographs.

Is there anything in particular that you like about my work?

Emma: I like the candid nature of your work and how I can see the personality of your subjects shine through. I also like how your work comes across as natural and without any sense of artificiality. I was also very attracted to the honest way that you described yourself on your website – that made it easier for me to contact you (I get nervous about contacting people I don’t know yet).

Justin: What immediately attracted me to your work was the degree of intimacy and personality that came out of each photo. It was obvious to me that you selected your locations, styling and final photographs because they best captured the person or couple and their individual and combined personalities. While it was clear you were shooting wedding photos, there was a very pleasing absence of mundane, boring, typical wedding photos, where you were distant from the subjects and simply trying to fit everyone in the frame. Instead, through your work, I felt I could make a few simple conclusions about the couple, and their relationship with each other, as well as your relationship with them.

How do you see your wedding day being as? For example, how will the day flow? And how would you like photography to be incorporated into your wedding day?

Emma: I really like Justin’s response below, so there isn’t much more I can add. Other than that perhaps we may need to increase our photography budget.

Justin: For me, the wedding day is not so much an end to the process of preparing for the “big day”, but rather a key moment in time at which Emma and I will formally declare our love for each other in front of our family and friends. Therefore, I would like our photography to reflect not so much the wedding ceremony as an event, but the wedding ceremony as part of our life journey together. By that I mean that I would like our photographs to capture the lead-up to the ceremony, the ceremony itself, and what comes next, with a real focus on the individuals and family / friend groups involved, rather than just the formal proceeding or venue as a stand-alone item. While there is a place for this, I would like it to form part of a broader sense of “journey”.

If you could describe yourselves in a few sentences, what would those sentences be?

Emma: I am a contradiction. I follow rules religiously, yet I don’t mind making up my own and being adventurous. I am introverted and have a strong tendency to get anxious, but people tell me that I’m confident and laugh a lot. I also really like cats.

Justin: I’m by my nature quite shy and reserved. Intimate photography will be a challenge for me, as I would much prefer the emphasis to be on Emma. However, I’m also not afraid to be tested, or pushed, and will work hard to give you what you need, so that together we can create some beautiful and everlasting images.

Why did I share this with you today?

Simply because in just over an hour, I’ll be taking Emma & Justin to Sydney’s Blue Mountains for their Love Story photography session.

Currently, I have two associate photographers. I refer to them as business associates because they play a significant role in the operation of Daniel K Cheung. In my morphology, a second photographer (or a second shooter), is a professional who is hired as an add-on on a contractual basis. An associate photographer differs in the sense that my associates have been trained by me. I provide an informal mentoring program across a year to my associates. They start as photography assistants then slowly progress towards becoming an associate of the business. To me, there is a clear difference between the roles and responsibilities between an assistant, and someone who takes on the burden of the business – which is what an associate is.

My associates are Jack Chauvel and Tai Huynh. Jack has recently established his own photography business. Tai is just happy to shoot. They have been with me since my first bookings. Each have brought their own vision and interpretation of weddings, and aligned them with my own approach – which makes Daniel K Cheung unique to every other wedding photographer. Without Jack & Tai, I would not be able to achieve a lot of the ‘success’ I have already. They are very much essential to the business, as I am. And I am always looking for new associate photographers.

Allow me to illustrate why having a second photographer is a good idea by a series of photos.

As a storyteller, my end-product is very different to that of traditional/conventional wedding photography. I tell stories. It is my byline. Stories are fluid. They are dynamic. And with all good stories, there is always more than one perspective and interpretation.

In the above sequence, MJ (the bride) has arrived at Shelley Beach. Kevin (the groom) awaits patiently. I was with MJ whereas my associate Jack Chauvel was with Kevin. I was told that upon seeing the bridal car arrive, Kevin teared up.

The above sequence, is a story in itself. Without a second photographer, it would have been a very different one-sided and incomplete story.

This is why I think having a second photographer is a good idea. The proof is in the pudding.

As I said in the beginning, my intention was not to say that photographers who shoot solo are bad. It is a personal preference. And my personal preference is to have a second perspective available. It does cost a bit extra, but I think you’ll agree with me, that the value exceeds the asking price.

These cool kids get married in July. So the count-down has well and truly started. We’re on the home stretch!

Once upon a time, these words all carried a certain degree of weight and meaning. Now they are just buzz words. Overused. And without much meaning anymore.

It is easy to be caught up in trends. I made that mistake last year.

In the wedding photography industry, trends come and go. Some stick around for longer than others. And when their expiry date arrives, that photo with that vintage effect, is going to look so dated and out of place.

I think it is always a good practice to stay abreast of what is the ‘in’ thing. Knowledge is power. But as creatives, it is important to know who you are so that you stay true to the core of the expressive arm of your business. Throughout 2011, my primary toning software was via a plugin called Alien Skin Exposure (version 3). It took me a few months to find it as most photographers I asked, wouldn’t tell me. So I used my google-fu skills. At the time, I had a simple Lightroom split-toning preset which had a magenta hue. It was nice, but I saw the creamy yellow tones of other photographers, and I wanted to do what they did.

That was my first mistake.

As a newcomer to the industry, I felt as though I had a lot to prove. I was like the new kid, and in order to fit in, I acted like the cool kids. So I looked at a lot of photographs by the big names of the industry. I tried my best to reverse engineer the colours of my favourite wedding photographers. And to an extent, I found what I was after.

Anyone can cook when following a recipe. In my opinion, a true chef is someone who can combine all sorts of ingredients and make something that amazes you. The same applies to photography. With ASE3, I could mimic the vintage-like tones that was the ‘in’ thing at the time. But when you peeled the layer of yellow away, there was no substance. And when that happens, you know you’re doing it wrong.

When you’re spending so much time following others, there isn’t much time left to lead yourself. I suppose every creative learns this lesson the hard way.

I’ve always marketed myself as a storyteller. It was and is a marketing term, chosen particularly to separate myself from every other photographer out there. But I do tell stories. I used to write long introductions to each blog post. Now, I let the photos speak for themselves. Each image is selected from a series, to weave a distinct interpretation of how I see the couple. However, without captions, I want the reader to make up their own story in their heads.

I think every wedding photographer, in some shape or form, tells a story. It is what we do. But the ability to tell a unique story every time, is what separates the true storytellers from those who simply take photos.

To be honest, I have no idea what the current fad and/or trend is in wedding photography. I have long ago, stopped chasing after such things. Using my own custom recipes, I have found a style of post processing that I like. But post processing is just the dressing. The core, the actual photo to begin with, must be good. And that is what is important. In order to be a good storyteller, I need to connect with my clients, so that they feel at ease in front of the camera, allowing me to capture the most intimate of moments (that the law allows in public hehe).

I am happy to share my post-processing technique. It is based on vscoFILM’s kodak portra 160 preset, with all grain and sharpness removed. I like my shadows and blacks to be very green and faded such that blacks are not true-black. The tones are slightly colder than what I used to have. This of course, may change. In fact, it probably will. If I can figure out how to export my preset, I will. Just contact me. There is no secret recipe. There is no secret period. As a self-taught photographer, I love sharing. If other photographers hadn’t shared their wealth of experiences, I would not be here today.
